When moving into a new apartment, do I need to hire movers?

Moving into a new apartment can be a joy but it can also be a lot of work. For all of you who have done this before, you know the hours that it takes to prepare for a move. Also, there is always the question of who will move my stuff? Am I going to move it all by myself (or with those living with me) or am I going to enlist help either paid or unpaid.

The first thing that one should consider is, do I have enough money to hire professional movers ? If not, you must then consider who will help you move your stuff. Remember to set aside a budget at least three months in advance to help cover the cost of hiring someone. If you decide to enlist the help of friends or relatives then just make sure that you think of how you will repay them. I generally make a good meal the night before; this is always a crowd pleaser.

Next, make sure that everything is packed and ready to go the night before. In order to make the move efficient and smooth, I make sure that all the boxes are labeled and stacked neatly in places that are easily accessible; this will save you time during the actual moving day. Most importantly, you will need to make sure that you have enough money saved for at least two months of rent; before signing a lease look at your bank account and think of your future expenses. Also, give yourself at least a week to clean your old place and make sure that nothing is in disrepair. I generally buy some touch-up paint two weeks beforehand and go around and paint areas on the wall that need it.

Once you have cleaned your old place and have everything packed, get a good night’s rest and a nice breakfast the morning of to ensure that your move will be less stressful. When your friends or relatives arrive assign them jobs that will make sure that everything will run smoothly- they are to be your apartment movers ! Make sure that you also have all the paperwork that you are going to need for your new apartment in an area that will be easy to retrieve when you get to your new place. I put mine in the moving truck the night before in a labeled folder.

When you arrive at your new place unlock the door and take a deep breath! This is your new home and hopefully it will serve you well. Prop the door open and move the boxes in. Make sure that you place your important paperwork, that was mentioned previously, somewhere safe. You will need to remember that your rent will be due at a certain time every month. Hopefully, the move will go well if you follow these simple steps.
