Moving Your Car Long Distance

If you are considering a long distance move of your residence, you will probably want to take your car with you. There are several options to consider. These include the time involved in driving a long distance, if you have multiple cars and whether or not you want to put a large number of miles on the car during the move. Of course cost is also a factor.

If driving the car is the right answer there are still multiple options to consider. The least costly is having you or one of your family members do it. If the timing works out you can plan it to arrive shortly before your furniture does. Another option is to hire someone to drive the car for you. Often this can be done informally but there is risk regarding insurance and damage to the vehicle. The other cost to consider is whether you have to pay for the driver to return to the point of origin.

Once you determine that driving the car will not work for you, then you can arrange to have the car shipped. Many long distance movers offer this service as part of the package. Another option is to contract directly with an auto shipper. You should be aware though that the time involved in this does not necessarily coincide with your furniture moving dates. There is a possibility that you and your belongings will arrive before your car does.

Shipping a car is usually done on vehicle transporters similar to those you see on the road carrying new vehicles. These trucks will not go point to point for one vehicle. Instead your shipper will be coordinating a number of other car deliveries along the way. There is a chance your vehicle may be loaded and unloaded along the way. Another consideration is the ability of your street, at either the origin or your destination, to handle a large trailer. The shipper may require you to drop off or pick up your car at terminal instead.

If you are moving out of the country and working with international movers, than there are other challenges to consider. If the destination can be reached by land they will use a service similar to the shippers described before. If not, the car will be placed on a boat, either, driven on and tied down, or inside of special containers. In addition to the move, you will have to be aware of customs regulations of both countries. Also, some countries limit the value of personal items, including cars, which can be brought in.
