About Iowa The U.S. obtained control of the area in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase before which the first Europeans to visit the area were the French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673. When Iowa became a state in 1846, its capital was Iowa City; the more centrally located Des Moines became the new capital in 1857. Although Iowa produces a tenth of the nation's food supply, the value of Iowa's manufactured products is more than that of its agriculture. Major industries are food and associated products, non-electrical machinery, electrical equipment, printing and publishing, and fabricated products. Could have been called the ‘food bowl of America’, its farms sell over $10 billion worth of crops and livestock annually. Iowa leads the nation in all corn, soybean and comes in third in total livestock sales. Its mineral products include cement, limestone, sand, gravel, gypsum, and coal. Getting its name probably from an Indian word meaning “this is the place” or “the Beautiful Land”, the local residents are known for their genuineness, warmth and sincerity. Before relocating in Iowa, it would be nice if you got yourself adequately informed about the State and its various facts: • Motto: Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain • Nickname: Hawkeye State • Its 5 largest cities: Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City and Waterloo. • Remember not to miss the capitol building, in Des Moines, built between 1871 and 1886 and features a dome gilded with 23-karat gold leaf. • The all time favorite in cowboy films, John Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa. • Iowa State University is the nation's oldest land grant university. Direct mail advertising was invented by Iowan Lester Martin in the 1920s.
