About Kentucky
The Kentucky region was originally part of Virginia, and statehood was gained in 1792. During the 19th century the state was famous for its prize exports: Kentucky Whiskey and Kentucky Rifles. Today, some of the nation's best tobacco, horses, and whiskey are grown and made in this State. Corn, soybeans, wheat, fruit, hogs, cattle, and dairy products are among the agricultural items produced. Motor vehicles, furniture, aluminum ware, brooms, apparel, lumber products, machinery, textiles, and iron and steel products make up its manufacturing industry. Significant amounts of petroleum, natural gas, fluorspar, clay, and stone are produced here though coal accounts for 85% of the total mineral income. A paradise for horse enthusiasts, Louisville is famous for the Kentucky Derby and the Bluegrass Country around Lexington is the home of some of the world's finest race horses. The Kentucky Derby draws hundreds of thousands of racing fans from all over the world to Louisville for a week of parades, poetry readings and parties. In case you are looking for some musical getaway, Bluegrass music is to Kentucky what jazz is to Louisiana. Live performances are to be found aplenty.
