About Rhode Island The smallest state in America, Rhode Island has never been known to be deterred by size. Distinguished through out the nation for its support for freedom of conscience and action, its rebellious and authority-defying nature, Rhode Island, just 48 miles long and 37 miles wide have always made headlines in America as well as the world. The burnings of the British revenue cutters Liberty and Gaspee prior to the Revolution; its early declaration of independence from Great Britain in May 1776; its refusal to participate actively in the War of 1812; and by Dorr's Rebellion of 1842, which protested property requirements for voting are only a few of the incidents which clearly define the States intrinsic character. Ever since Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams as a shelter from the religious intolerance of Puritan Massachusetts, the state and its residents have been defying authority. Newport in the state became famous as the summer capital of high society in the mid-19th century. Today it is densely populated and highly industrialized. It is a major center for jewelry manufacturing. Electronics, metal, plastic products, and boat and ship construction are other important industries. Employment opportunities in the non-manufacturing sector include research in health, medicine, and the ocean environment. Tourism is not far behind. It generates over a billion dollars a year in revenue. Fishing ports are at Galilee and Newport. Rural areas of the state support small-scale farming, including grapes for local wineries, turf grass, and nursery stock. Here are some of the most interesting facts about Rhode Island: Motto: Hope Official name: The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Nickname: The Ocean State Origin of name: From the Greek Island of Rhodes Rhode Island's capital is Providence. Rhode Island was the first of the 13 colonies to outlaw slavery. Because of its small size, Rhode Island does not have any counties or county government. The first circus in the U.S. took place in Newport, Rhode Island in 1774. It is the first state in America where polo was played and the first to have a tennis tournament. In Newport, Rhode Island it's illegal to smoke a pipe after sunset.
