About Vermont Vermont may surprise an average American visitor. Consider these facts: Vermont is one of the smallest states in the country, both geographically and demographically; until 1996, Vermont was the only state in America without a Wal-Mart; Vermont's state capital Montpelier has a population of 8,035 people and the city still does not have a McDonald's outlet. If you are reasonably surprised and want to know why it is this way, you have to travel back in time a bit – to mid 19th century when many farmers and timber companies decided to go west looking for more fertile soils and denser forests, giving Vermont no real opportunity to grow and have large industries etc. Even today, Burlington, Vermont’s largest city carries a population of little over 150,000. But do all these things make Vermont less charming? Come and experience its skiing, camping and vacationing opportunities and you will like its serenity and stay here forever. The industries here concentrate on monument granite, marble, and maple syrup. It is also a leader in the production of talc. Vermont's rugged, rocky terrain discourages extensive agricultural farming, but is well suited to raising fruit trees and to dairy farming. Principal industrial products include electrical equipment, fabricated metal products, printing and publishing, and paper and allied products. Needless to mention that tourism is a major industry in Vermont. Its many famous ski areas include Stowe, Killington, Mt. Snow, Okemo, Jay Peak, and Sugarbush. Hunting and fishing also attract many visitors to Vermont each year. Here are some interesting facts about Vermont: • Motto: Vermont, Freedom and Unity • Nickname: Green Mountain State • Origin of name: From the French “vert mont,” meaning “green mountain” • Ben and Jerry of Ben & Jerry's ice cream make their colorful flavors in this state. • Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the United States. • Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the country. • Before it became a state, parts of Vermont were claimed by New York and New Hampshire. • Ben & Jerry's factory donates its waste to Vermont farmers who use it to feed their pigs.
