About Wyoming These three things must never happen simultaneously: You are walking in the woods somewhere in Wyoming in the month of June; you locate a cute little rabbit trotting along; you decide immediately to take a snapshot to show your kid at home. Remember it is against the law to take a picture of a rabbit in June if you are in Wyoming! A state which is more than 60 times the size of Rhode Island, Wyoming has less than half the population. In Wyoming, there are more cattle than humans and cattle outnumber people by three to one. Even the Pronghorn Antelope in the state exceeds the number of taxpayers. Now can we make out why the state motto reads Equal rights and the state is also known by its nickname: Equality State. Wyoming got its name from the Delaware Indian word, meaning “mountains and valleys alternating”. The U.S. acquired the land comprising Wyoming from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. John Colter, a fur-trapper, is the first white man known to have entered the region. In 1807 he explored the Yellowstone area and brought back news of its geysers and hot springs. Today, mining, particularly oil and natural gas, is the most important industry. Wyoming has the world's largest sodium carbonate (natrona) deposits and has the nation's second largest uranium deposits. In 2004 Wyoming ranked second among the states in wool production and third in sheep and lambs. Principal crops include wheat, oats, sugar beets, corn, barley, and alfalfa. Second in mean elevation to Colorado, Wyoming has many attractions for the tourist trade, notably Yellowstone National Park. Hikers, campers and skiers are attracted to Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole National Monument in the Teton Range of the Rockies. Here are some more interesting tit bits about the state: • The state capital is Cheyenne. • Yellowstone became the first national park in the U.S. in 1872. • Wyoming was the first state to give women the right to vote. • The Black Thunder coal mine outside Wright, Wyoming is the largest in the country.
